Trauma at the Tomb

A new piece for Christian Century, on something that's bothered me for years: The original ending of Mark's Gospel — abrupt, unresolved, with the women at the tomb too terrified to speak—got edited by later scribes into something tidier.

I make the case that the discomfort of that original ending is actually the point, and that trauma theology has something to teach us about why we're so uncomfortable with stories that don't resolve.
